Getting ready for NaNoWriMo 2009

It’s that time of year again! NaNoWriMo 2009 will start on Sunday, November 1, 2009 and last until midnight on November 30, 2009. In the interim, several hundred thousand people will try to see if they can write a whopping 50,000 words as part of National Novel Writing Month.

This will be my second year as a NaNoWriMo participant. I was a “winner” last year, completing my 50,000 word opus with a day or two to go. I can’t wait to start writing again — I think I’ll have a bit more of an easy time writing the novel this year, since I know what to expect and I know that I can do it.

My wife signed up today, so the two of us will be hitting the keyboards day in and day out for the next month. I just hope she doesn’t get too concerned about writing “perfectly,” which is a real issue during NaNoWriMo. You just need to let the words flow, and worry about whether or not it’s a really well written story afterwards.

Totally off the topic of NaNoWriMo, I’d like to talk about the attack on me yesterday. It’s still going on; and it’s totally confusing to me.

What happened? I wrote a short blurb over on TUAW about the Apple TV 3.0 update that came out yesterday. I did the update, had a hell of a time doing it, and when it was done, I felt that the Apple TV was still the piece of shit that it is. It’s the worst Apple product made without a doubt. So what happened? I ended up getting tons of hate mail, people asking for me to be fired (yeah, have you ever heard of freedom of speech, assholes?), and folks who said that they were going to stop reading anything written by me. Nice.

You can read the original post and the hate mail here: http://www.tuaw.com/2009/10/29/hands-on-with-the-underwhelming-apple-tv-3-0-u… As of the time of this post on Friday evening, I had about 124 comments, most of which were extremely critical of the post. How do I feel about it? I don’t really care — this just shows that a) people are reading my work and b) that there are a lot of mean-spirited people out there. I think what they need to do is get a life — the type of hatred that was spewed at me about an innocuous Apple TV post was worse than I’ve seen when people say things like “Nancy Pelosi is a botox bitch” on websites (that comment IS true, by the way).

Stay tuned to this site for more info on how Barb and I are doing on NaNoWriMo 2009.
